79-year-old Phil Warren from the UK spent 62 years to build this incredible fleet of 432 ships and 1200 aircraft, all built entirely of matchsticks and their wooden boxes. The collection includes 370 U.S. and 60 British ships and their associated aircraft.

Now 79 years of age, he began creating his first boat in 1948 when he was 17. He uses a razor blade, tweezers, sandpaper and glue. He has used more than 650,000 matchsticks to create this amazing collection of 1:300 scale models

Making homemade Filler Goop

A home-made filler and glue

On the right is a bottle of liquid polystyrene cement. On the left is a bottle of poly goop made by adding small chips of styrene (shown below the bottle) to the poly cement.

This article shows how to make a useful product that both glues and fills gaps at the same time.

Making Poly-Goop

Making poly-goop is very easy. Take a half-used bottle of liquid polystyrene cement and add to it small chips of styrene cut from waste sprue.

Here it is possible to see the 'gloopy' consistency of the poly goop.

Polystyrene cement works by dissolving the surface of the styrene. The styrene chips added to the liquid cement will gradually dissolve to make a thick goop. How long it will take to dissolve depends on the strength of the poly cement, but it may be a few days, or a couple of weeks. The thickness of the goop depends on how many chips have been added.

The goop can be made thicker by adding more styrene chips or thinned by adding more liquid poly cement. The eventual colour of the poly goop will depend on the colour of the styrene chips added.

Simulating paint chips and wear with salt

This close up shows how rust had caused the paint on the side of this AFV to flake away. Paint can also be removed due to regular wear and abrasions.

Introduction

This tutorial will provide a step-by-step guide to a technique that simulates paint chipping and rust effects using common table salt. The method is quick, easy and relatively forgiving.

Background

The pristine appearance of combat vehicles and aircraft when they come out of the factory does not tend to last very long when subjected to the hard realities of life in the field.
Even during times of peace, military equipment gets rough treatment since it will be subject to exercises that simulate combat. As a result, the upper coats of paint will often show the underlying layers due to wear and tear, corrosion, or accidents.

This German fighter plane exhibits unusual paint wear near the nose.Unless you intend to make your models as they appeared when brand new, then you will have to face the problem of simulating wear, damage and dirt - generally known as 'weathering'.

An aerosan (Russian: aэросани, aerosani, literally 'aerosled') is a type of propeller-powered snowmobile, running on skis, used for communications, mail deliveries, medical aid, emergency recovery and border patrolling in northern Russia, as well as for recreation. Aerosans were used by the Soviet Red Army during the Winter War and the Second World War.

The first aerosans may have been built by young Igor Sikorsky in 1909–10, before he built multi-engine airplanes and helicopters. They were very light plywood vehicles on skis, propelled by old airplane engines and propellers.

Military aerosans

Military use of the aerosan goes back to at least the 1920s. During the 1939–40 Winter War against Finland, some were equipped with a machine-gun ring mount on the roof. They could carry four to five men, and tow four more on skis. The aerosans were initially used for transport, liaison, and medical evacuation in deep snow, and mostly used in open country and on frozen lakes and rivers because of their poor hill-climbing ability and limited manoeuvrability on winding forest roads.

During WWII, aerosans were found to be useful for reconnaissance and light raiding in northern areas, thanks to their high mobility in deep snow (25–35 km/h, where many vehicles couldn't move at all). Responsibility for aerosans was transferred to the Soviet Armoured Forces (GABTU) and orders were submitted for design and fabrication of lightly-armoured versions, protected by ten millimetres of steel plate on front.

6574 - German Warriors 1940-41
Despite what war movies might purport to show, the majority of a soldier’s time is not spent in frontline combat. Dragon’s latest 1/35 scale figure set is thus an accurate portrayal of a war scene, for it shows German soldiers performing various mundane but nevertheless essential activities. Buckling up a belt, adjusting a chin strap, taking off a tunic or putting on personal gear are pretty ordinary events, but these are exactly the kind of things these five figures are doing. While perhaps not as dramatic as firing a weapon or performing a bayonet charge, these kinds of actions are certain to lend an air of authenticity to a modeler’s dioram a.

The German figures represent the early-war period, suitable for any European theater in 1940-41. Each figure is masterfully molded and anatomically accurate. The faces are carefully scuplted, as are their everyday actions. They wear a variety of uniforms, including three Wehrmacht soldiers dressed in typical M1935 field gray tunics, trousers and leather boots. Meanwhile, one figure is kitted out as a Panzer crewman, while the final one would suit a Sturmartillerie unit. Modelers are always clamoring for more figures to populate their dioramas and vignettes, and they don’t come any more practical than this! With its credible and lifelike poses, this set will find multiple uses in many dioramas to come.

1/35 "Fragile Alliance" Axis Forces, Balkan 1943 (4 Figures Set)

After Italy ventured into Albania in 1939, Mussolini decided to invade Greece on 28 October 1940. The Italian armed forces found it hard going, and in fact, it required the intervention of German forces attacking via Yugoslavia to finally capture the region. Yugoslavia and Greece were divided into sectors, with Italian, German, Bulgarian and Rumanian forces policing these occupied territories against determined partisan resistance.

Italy occupied two-thirds of Greece (including its islands), Albania and the Yugoslav coast. Although they were supposed to be allies, there was often tension in the relationship between Germany and Italy. After Benito Mussolini was ousted in July 1943, the country signed a secret armistice on 3 September, bringing Italy’s combat involvement in WWII to an end. German forces in Italy and the Balkans moved quickly to disarm their former allies and to take up critical defensive positions, with significant violence taking place in some garrisons.
